Contra Huckabee

The picture of Christ as it comes to us from the New Testament is in the first instance, therefore, actually weird -- not just in the strange, scandalizing quality inherent in God's peculiar and divine dealings with man that surpass human wisdom; but strange or 'queer' in a purely human, cultural-religious sense.

- - Edward Schillebeeckx, Jesus: An Experiment in Christology

You may remember that in his meandering theological comments Republican Candidate Huckabee indicated that scripture is jarring mainly because of human frailty breaking against infinite wisdom. Frail or not, we are also jarred because scripture also includes ancient cultural teachings that are incommensurate with modern cultural values, even modern faith-based values.
